Iowa Heritage Digital Collections Committee

Here the "action items" from yesterday, October 29, 2003

....Final thought--should we be an Alliance, Consortium, Guild, or Federation, as opposed to a Committee? Just a thought for when we review in the future.  Tanya

Attendance:

Iowa State Library, Ames Public Library, Carnegie-Stout Library, Drake University, Davenport Public Library, University of Iowa, Sioux City Public Museum, National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, University of Northern Iowa, St. Ambrose University, Iowa State University

The Project Name was changed to:  Iowa Heritage Digital Collections

The Group Name was changed to: Iowa Heritage Digital Collections Committee

Revised mission statement (review annually):

The Iowa Heritage Digital Collections is envisioned as an on-line collection of Iowa history and culture created by bringing together documents, images, maps, finding aids, interpretive and educational materials, and other media from collections held by a wide range of organizations throughout Iowa.  These organizations will include colleges and universities, public libraries, schools, historical societies, museums, archives and other appropriate groups.  Access to the Iowa Heritage Digital Collections will enable searching across these multiple collections while at the same time maintaining the identity of each individual organization.

Goals:

First 4 remain the same

To establish basic criteria and standards based on best practices

To provide the technical infrastructure for persistence and sustainability of electronic collections

To develop training assistance and other resources necessary to enable a diverse range of organizations, of varying size and means, from throughout the state to participate in the initiatives

Last goal remains the same.

The group determined a separate funding statement will be developed at a later time.

Copyright statement: Approved, although the group noted the need for a disclaimer statement related to potentially offensive historical material somewhere on the website.  The statement will also be revised to reflect the project's new name.

Look of the website:

The second page will have its links condensed somewhat for easier viewing.

The main page will be redesigned to focus on 3 buttons (About; Search; Collections Directory).  Daniel will send this version to the group for comments.  There will also be rephrasing of the text to reflect the IHDC, the purchase of a separate domain name, and a credits page to be added.

Communication:  Daniel will be setting up a listserv for the group.

Pilot Project:

The initial pilot project will include St. Ambrose and the Czech and Slovak Museum and Library.  They were given the acquisitions software, along with the Ames Public Library.

The following working groups were created:

Metadata:  Claudia, Dave, Jennifer, Tanya, Amy, Nancy, and Barb

Grants (for possible IMLS submission in April): Bruce and John

Other groups for the future:  Preservation, Training, Technical Specifications

After setting the date of Wednesday, December 10, 10:30 a.m. as the date of their next meeting at the State Library in Des Moines (*snow date: December 15*), the group adjourned.
